5 STRATEGIES TO ENSURE QUALITY PROGRAMMING
1. LISTEN TO YOUR RESIDENTS
When you learn about your residents' interests, needs, and wants, what do you do with that information?
Are you cultivating it to create programs and opportunities for them?
2. IDENTIFY THE 'WHY' FOR A PROGRAM
What is the purpose for a program?
Is it based on known resident interests?
Did they request it?
Is it evidence-based by research to support longevity?
Have you considered resident led programs; i.e. lectures, creative skills, or outings?
3. ENGAGEMENT VS ENTERTAINMENT
Do programs and events support engagement (movement, mindfulness, intrigue, creativity) or is it to fill time with passive entertainment?
Outsourced music, performers, films, and speakers are important, but should not be the the majority of offerings
4. PROGRAMMING IS NOT CHILD'S PLAY
Yes, age related frailty occurs and may present itself in child-like behaviors and memories from some residents, but that does not mean we create childlike programs, reuse elementary crafts, games, and décor for events?
Dignified, age appropriate programs are recommended for ALL offerings
5. QUANTITY IS NOT THE ANSWER
The more, the merrier is no longer the case. Consider a day of less busy and more intentional, elevated opportunities.
Combine single dimension offerings into a layered approach when possible.
Ask yourself, would myself of staff find the activity worthwhile.
